Enters IC Package Physical
Design Market by Acquiring Technology License from Synopsys
Provides Full Spectrum of Tools to Tackle IC Package
Design and Analysis Challenges
SANTA CLARA, Calif., February
7, 2006 — Sigrity, Inc., the market leader in power
and signal integrity software solutions, today announced
the acquisition from Synopsys, Inc. of a worldwide
perpetual unrestricted license to advanced single and
multi-chip IC package design technology, including
technology embodied in Synopsys’ Encore products. This
acquisition also includes assets used by the Encore
product team located in Rochester, NY. Encore product
team members in technical marketing, R&D and customer
support joined Sigrity as part of this acquisition.
Financial terms of the agreement were not disclosed.
The integration of technologies from Synopsys’ Encore
products with Sigrity’s widely adopted power and signal
integrity tools will provide design engineers with a
complete arsenal of IC design and analysis solutions to
design complex IC packages right the first time.
The Encore product line, introduced
in the mid-1990s by Xynetix Design Systems, was the first
EDA tool developed specifically for physical design of
advanced IC packages. Prior to Encore, designers were faced
with using mechanical or PCB CAD systems, neither of which
provided the intelligence or throughput required for
increasingly complex BGA style packages. Encore’s unique
package-specific architecture and automated functionality
significantly reduced cycle times and improved quality. In
1999 Xynetix was acquired by Avant!, which subsequently was
acquired by Synopsys in 2002. Throughout this period,
Encore continued to evolve to keep pace with new package
technologies such as stacked-die, flip-chip and
system-in-package. In widespread use by both semiconductor
and package manufacturers, the Encore product line delivers
unique functionality to produce high-quality designs within
the shortest cycle time.
“We are very pleased to be able to
offer our customers the market-proven technologies of the
Encore product line and bring the highly experienced Encore
product team members onboard,” said Jiayuan Fang, president
of Sigrity. “The combination of the Encore technologies and
Sigrity package design and analysis products, in addition to
our expertise in package tool development and support,
provide our customers optimum capability for handling the
most challenging physical design and analysis issues –
ensuring the integrity of their overall package designs.”
Antun Domic, senior vice president
and general manager of the implementation group at Synopsys
said, “We’ve been pleased with the collaborations with
Sigrity, and we are looking forward to working together to
serve our common customers. Synopsys will continue to
maintain its full obligations to its existing customers.
Sigrity is well positioned to grow this technology to its
full potential.”
According to Nozad Karim, vice
president of applications engineering and characterization
at Amkor Technology, Inc in Chandler, Arizona, “The
combination of Sigrity’s outstanding power and signal
integrity EDA software solutions with package physical
design tools promises to provide a complete package solution
that will help package designers design faster and get
designs right the first time.”
Sigrity’s package physical design
product, including technologies embodied in Synopsys’ Encore
product and incorporated with Sigrity’s electrical analysis
functionalities, will be marketed later this quarter with a
product name other than Encore. Pricing information will be
available shortly.
